A little about me

I’m Nicole Pollen — a specialist dyslexia assessor and teacher working with children and families across Tunbridge Wells and West Kent.

I started Pollen Assessment and Learning because I believe every child deserves to feel capable and successful. Many of the children I work with arrive having lost confidence; in reading, in school, sometimes in themselves. Watching that confidence return is the best part of my job.

Qualifications and experience

  • QTS and 15 years of classroom teaching experience.
  • Level 5 Certificate in Teaching Learners with Dyslexia and Specific Learning Difficulties. (British Dyslexia Association)
  • Level 7 Certificate in Teaching and Assessing Learners with Dyslexia and Specific Learning Difficulties. (Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity)
  • Member of PATOSS
  • Enhanced DBS (Current)

After qualifying as a teacher, I spent many years teaching in primary schools before specialising in dyslexia. I now work both in schools and privately, carrying out dyslexia assessments and supporting children who are experiencing literacy difficulties. Much of my work involves helping families understand why a child is struggling and what support is likely to help. Because I continue to work directly with children, my assessment recommendations are grounded in current teaching practice and focused on what is realistically achievable in school and at home.

How I work

I take time to understand how your child learns, whether through assessment, teaching or both. Every recommendation and every session is tailored to their individual strengths and needs.

  • Built around your child

Tutoring sessions are paced and shaped to how your child learns best; never one-size-fits-all.

  • Calm and encouraging

We build skills and confidence together, because they grow together.

  • You're kept in the loop

Regular plain-English updates, plus liaison with your child's school where it helps.

Where I work

I'm based in Speldhurst, near Tunbridge Wells, and support families across West Kent and the surrounding areas, from my garden classroom.
